The 2025 U.S. Open started this morning, June 12th, at the Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania. It’s a four-day event full of dramatic wins and losses on the green between 156 total golfers, all looking to bring home the title by having the lowest score at the end of the four days. If you’re still unsure who to root for, we’ve compiled a list of athletes you might like based on your fashion preferences. Whether you enjoy a casual, coastal, or vibrant look on the green, there’s definitely an athlete for you to follow during this U.S. Open.

Classical/Traditional

It’s hard not to stick Rory McIlroy in the classical category after seeing him wear the traditional green Masters blazer at his title win back in April. McIlroy is one for monochromatic Nike combinations, usually in shades of blue, khaki, white, and grey. Although he doesn’t shy away from the occasional vibrant color, McIlroy seems to stick to the more traditional, professional golf outfits.

Tom Kim, from the Republic of Korea, has a very similar style to McIlroy, characterized by a sleek white shirt and pants combination, as well as a classic polo. While Kim is more willing to get fancy with his polo colors and patterns, he shows up to every green looking and playing sharp.

Coastal

Chase Johnson is a perfect player to root for if you’re a coastal cowgirl. His floral polo shirts combine the classic look of golf outfits with a unique, beachy twist. Although from Ohio, Johnson’s current home in Florida might be a nod to his style on the green - either way, his Birds-of-Paradise polo in his U.S. Open headshot seems like a promise that he’ll deliver more coastal looks this tournament.

Casual

Frédéric LaCroix of France is a great player to root for if you like a casual golf look. Though he keeps many elements of the traditional golf attire, such as his Callaway hat and tucked-in polos, LaCroix tends to rock a more sporty, modern look, such as this green Nike half-zip.

Riley Lewis is another player to root for if you like the casual golfing look. As a recent alumni of Loyola Marymount University, Lewis is a relatively young player who brings a casual flair to his outfits on the green. Although most of his outfits have been representative of his college team, whether a blue LMU polo or his Lions hat, it’ll be exciting to see what Lewis decides to wear to the 2025 U.S. Open. If his Adidas rain jacket from this picture tells us anything, it’s that his outfit might be on the casual side but still sleek, professional, and ready to chase a win.

Streetwear Fusion

This section might seem like it was made especially for Jason Day and his Malbon Golf outfits - but hey - if it works, it works. Day has made waves in the golf world with his unique streetwear and golf fusion outfits after his contract with Nike ended, and he began to represent Malbon Golf, created by designer and golf enthusiast couple Steven and Erica Malbon. His outfits, like the one above for the 2025 Masters, are both highly criticized and highly adored. If you like to use your looks to stand out and make a statement, Jason Day is the player for you.

Adam Scott, from Australia (left), is also known for his sleek yet unique fashion choices, featuring striped shirts and bold-colored polos sponsored by Uniqlo. The pair is sure to stun once again this week in the U.S. Open.

Matt Vogt - United States

Okay, look - even though Matt Vogt’s fashion itself isn’t very reminiscent of streetwear, his story is one that someone who enjoys a modern, creative, and out-of-the-box style would love. Dubbed “the dentist playing in the U.S. Open,” Vogt is quite literally a dentist in Indianapolis who played part of a collegiate career of golf at Butler before moving on to dental school and stopping competitive play for around seven years.

As a former caddie at Oakmont Country Club, he’s back at an oddly familiar place but with a brand new mission - play the U.S. Open. Talk about full circle. Vogt is living proof that you don’t have to give up on the exciting and cool elements of life just because of your day job as a dentist. One important element to look out for in Vogt’s outfit is a blue ribbon pin on his hat, which he plans to wear in honor of his late father, Jim Vogt, and to raise awareness for colon cancer.

Sports…ish

As a self-proclaimed sneakerhead, Tony Finau is a great player to root for if you enjoy blending sports and fashion. Finau headed into college with multiple scholarship offers to play basketball but ultimately chose to pursue a professional career in golf instead. Finau showed his support on the green for NBA legend Kobe Bryant after his tragic passing in 2020 and is known to be a lifelong Lakers fan (with the exception of his home-state team owned by his buddy Ryan Smith - the Utah Jazz). Finau’s blend of sponsored Nike golf outfits and Nike basketball gear is sure to impress any sports(ish) fashion fans, who should definitely be on the lookout for what sneakers Finau decides to wear in the U.S. Open.

Athleisure

While we suppose that all of the outfits above are technically athletic wear because athletes are wearing popular sports brands during their sporting events, Australian golfer Min Woo Lee takes athletic wear to a whole ‘nother level as the first golfer to sign with Lululemon as his sponsor back in 2024. If you love a good, high-quality pair of Lululemon leggings or a Define jacket, whether it's to wear lounging around the house or to golf in, Min Woo Lee is definitely your player to look out for at the U.S. Open.

In fact, Lee has a Lululemon collection available now, featuring golf-themed logos and the slogan “Let Him Cook!” If you’re an athleisure fan eager to support a player like Min Woo Lee, his collection is now sold at Lululemon.
